Anxiety relief – step 1

Changing the brain’s response to Stress and Fear.

The main purpose of a kinesiology session is to change the brain’s response to stress. First we have to find out what specific things the brain is stressed about and then change how the brain responds.

When a person is stressed, anxious or fearful about something their brain goes into the fight / flight response. This means that the brain’s focus at that time is to protect the person and make sure they survive the upcoming threat. The part of the brain best equipped to do this is the ‘reptilian brain’ composed of the brain stem and the cerebellum, located at the back of the head.

The neocortex, also know as the executive brain (ie the part of the brain that does logic and rational thinking; coming up with new options and ideas) takes a back seat during times of extreme stress. The reptilian brain stores our old patterns – the things we learned early in childhood. This means that we tend to repeat the same response when stressed.

Part of a fundamental re-patterning process is to encourage the brain to change the way it responds to a stress by using a very simple technique, which we call frontal occipital holding. Simply put, the client holds the front and the back of their head to integrate the two areas. By holding the front of the head blood flow is encouraged back to the neocortex and allows the formation of new options and new responses.

Other techniques are added to encourage the changes in the brain but just the simple holding of the head makes a real difference to how your brain responds to stress.

So if your are feeling stressed or anxious hold the front and back of your head and breath deeply until you feel more relaxed. I’ll cover why we do deep breathing in the next post.
