Genetics of Breast Cancer

Kudos to Angelina for sharing her story about facing the threat of breast cancer. With the odds stacking up against you it’s not an easy decision for anyone. But do not be afraid of your genes. Looking at genetics is not only a question of carrying the gene for a disease but also what turns that gene oEpigenetics is the science that investigates what triggers a gene to express itself.

Science is starting to consider the power of our thoughts and how they affect our body, including our genetics. In my field of kinesiology we approach the question holistically by examining the psychological and emotional factors as well as the physical. There are a lot of inherited beliefs, patterns, values and emotions that get passed on through families and cultures. There are so many issues for women both personally and culturally over the generations, around their rights, their value, their role in society and their very safety as the vulnerable sex.

Angelina Jolie

There is a lot of ground to recover for women on their journey to reclaiming their femininity, sexuality and power. Angelina Jolie certainly embraces her sexuality, uses her power and position while still remaining a generous mother and wife.  Or so it appears – what do you think?

What are your inherited patterns and beliefs about women and womanhood?

Do you honour, embrace, value and respect your femininity? Is there breast cancer or ovarian cancer in your family and could the patterns be related?

Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of.” Angelina Jolie, NY Times
